All right, so it's been a while. Did you ever think I might have other things to do? Hmm?
I mean, I didn't, but that doesn't mean that I might have. I bet you just feel awful.
Read on, if the shame lets you.
My dog ate my update.
I guess the first thing to mention would be GDC, which is known as the Game Developer's Conference. It was hectic, it was exciting, it was expensive, and it was worth it.
I won't give a run-down of the sessions I went to, but I'm glad I attended every one. With so many viewpoints and experiences represented, I don't really see how you could come away from the conference without learning something new.
As an aside, I'd like to thank Brad, Dave, Jon, Keith, and Jeff for not running away when I accosted them in the Fairmont lobby, and then staying up far too late to let me get a peek at that game thing they're working on. SO COOL(tm).
I thought the updates were someone else's job.
My air conditioner doesn't like to run all that much. I plan on getting it fixed... but I REALLY LIKE the energy savings. Plus, I am lazy.
The Texan broke my update.
Liege is back in development. We're going to take the next few months and add in the campaign portion (which was always planned, but we never had time for), and tweak the battles so it doesn't come down to a simple rush. We're shooting for the non-student IGF competition next year.
We're also using a centralized code versioning system, which sounded really cool. I have to run the server, which isn't so cool. So far I've tried two packages which were supposed to run on Win2K... and either I'm not smart enough to run them, or they don't actually run. I'm not sure I like running servers any more.
Updates are SO last year.
I got in the final phase of public beta for City of Heroes, which means I got to test it for two whole days before they shut beta down and reset the servers. I'm sure I and all the other testers really helped them out a lot.
It might have helped their bottom line, though, because I had an absolute blast playing the game. I mean, first of all, you get to be a superhero, and that's awesome. Second of all, the newbie experience is top notch -- I was never at a loss for what I was supposed to do next. Thirdly, the art direction is superb, with a retro-future cityscape that I just love. Finally, you get to be a superhero.
The amount of customization options for your character are unbelievable. Heights from 3 to 10 feet, 3 body types that are tweakable from lithe to musclebound, and approximately 3496785265432 different combinations of costume styles, before you start messing with colors. The lack of capes and other long garments (long skirts, trenchcoats, dusters, robes, etc) is the only flaw, and that's supposedly due in an upcoming patch. I'm definitely going to be dispensing justice sometime soon.
Update, at a time like THIS?
That's about it, for now. I might update again... sometime. I ain't guaranteeing nothing, though.
don't be shocked by the sound of my voice
